The Feast of the Annunciation, which takes place on March 25th, is one of the most important events on the Orthodox liturgical calendar. In this icon, the Virgin stands very still and erect, wearing a blue robe and purple mantle. She holds a thread of red wool in her hands. The Archangel Gabriel appears and delivers his message to Mary, with his right hand stretching out in a gesture of blessing. In his left hand is a three-pronged staff. The scene takes place against a detailed architectural background. At the top of the icon, God the Father, in the guise of the Ancient of Days, looks down as he breathes the Holy Spirit (seen as a dove) upon Mary. The icon is finely painted in pastel colors. contact |
