Portative icons of metal, stone, carved wood, bone and ivory are small replica of larger icons painted on wood panels. In times of wars and other disasters they could be easily transported and were therefore in great demand.
St Nicolas with a sword in one hand and a model of the city of Mozhaisk in the other is depicted in this icon. This is a purely Russian composition. It originated from the XII century when Mozhaisk was besieged by the Tatars and St Nicholas, according to the legend, led the Russian to victory.
