Icon: Mother of God Joy of the Afflicted
|Name:||Icon: Mother of God Joy of the Afflicted||Size:||27 x 22 cm|
Mother of God Joy to all who grieve. In the center the Mother of God is standing on clouds, holding her child. Angels and people with various afflictions on either side present their supplications. At the top God the Father is behind the clouds.
The feast is celebrated on October 24th. The theme is inspired by the following hymn (below): O most Holy Lady, Mistress, Mother of God, higher than all angels and archangels, and more honourable than all creatures: you are the help of the injured, hope of the weak, intercessor of the poor, consolation of the sorrowing, feeder of the hungry, clother of the naked, healer of the sick, salvation of sinners and defence of all Christians!
The prototype first appeared in the Church of the Transfiguration in Moscow in 1643. The feast day is celebrated on October 24th.
The icon is finely painted and from the Palekh school.
