According to the legend, the twelve Apostles were present at the deathbed of the Virgin.
They are depicted together with four early Christian writers James, Dionysius the Areopagite, Hierotheos and Timotheos of Ephesus. The Apostles are shown twice: grouped around the bier, and transported to the scene on clouds accompanied by angels.
Behind the bier Christ stands surrounded in the aureole signifying heavenly glory. Christ receives the soul of the Mother of God. On top of the icon, the Mother of God is sitting on a throne which is carried by angels into Heaven.
The icon is finely painted in great detail with elaborate gold ornamentation on a golden background.
The icon has a silver gilded revetment (oklad) with relief, engravings, strigillated raised rim, dated 1857, assayer A.C in Cyrillic, Moscow, 84 standard, master M.S. in Cyrillic = Michael Shyein.
