On this four-part icon is at the top left a representation of Nicholas, on the right is the Mother of God of the Sign. Bottom left Mother of God Tschentochovskaya (she who softens the hard hearts) and on the right the decapitation of John the Forerunner (= the Baptist). The type of the Mother of God who softens the hard hearts is perhaps derived from the text of Ezekiel 11,19: “I will remove their stone heart from their body and give them a heart of flesh”.
